Healdsburg to Skeggs Springs/Cazadero (ride rating: X/3.5/118)
Testing the "Terrible Two", Part III Healdsburg - Skeggs Springs/Cazadero Richard Bone 4/13/96 X/3.5/118 Starting Point: Parking Plaza opp. Beacon gas station, Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg, CA. Street parking in the town is limited; there is a rough courtesy public parking area on the right, opposite the Beacon station which you will see immediately you enter Healdsburg. Other parking is available one block north Q make a left on Matheson St., following signs for "Public Parking". Directions: From Hwy-101 (N) take the Healdsburg Ave exit and Follow the road into downtown Healdsburg; parking is in unpaved area on the right. If you take the subsequent exit from 101 (Q for "Central Healdsburg"), go straight through two lights. Brief Ride Description: This ride is an attempt to tackle the second century of the infamous "Terrible Two" course and is the third of a series of 3 rides which cover the hardest ascents of that course. This ride starts and finishes at Healdsburg, CA and covers the significant portions of climbing of the second half of the "Terrible Two" course, in particular Skaggs Springs Rd., the climb out of Fort Ross and the climb to Cazadero. The last section of this ride goes through a flat wine-growing region towards Healdsburg and is very picturesque. Notes: I drove the course, March 3rd, 1996. It was cold in the early-mid morning but warm throughout the day. I rode the course, April 13th, 1996 when it was hot. It should be possible to complete the ride in under 9 hours in most conditions. There are no amenities for the first 50 miles or so; Skaggs Springs road is very remote and comprises a challenging succession of steep climbs and technical descents. It can take 3 hours to traverse its length. It is advisable to be prepared with ample supplies of water and food and, in summer, to start out early. Useful Maps: "Krebs Cycle" Bicycle Touring Map, North San Francisco Bay/Sacramento; CSAA: Santa Rosa and Vicinity, Sonoma and Napa Counties. Devised by: Richard Bone (rgab@crl.com), March 1996; minor amendments, July 1996. See Also: Parts I (#0287) and II (#0288) of this "mini-series" of rides which take in the climbs over "Trinity Grade" and "The Geysers", respectively. Note that it would be possible to base this ride out of Santa Rosa instead of Healdsburg.
