Healdsburg - The Geysers (ride rating: X/3/55)
Testing the Terrible Two Part II Healdsburg - The Geysers X/3/55 Starting Point: Parking Plaza opp. Beacon gas station, Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg, CA. Street parking in the town is limited; there is a rough courtesy public parking area on the right, opposite the Beacon station which you will see immediately you enter Healdsburg. Other parking is available one block north Q make a left on Matheson St., following signs for Public Parking. Directions: From Hwy-101 (N) take the Healdsburg Ave exit and follow the road into downtown Healdsburg; parking is in unpaved area on the right. If you take the subsequent exit from 101 (Q for "Central Healdsburg"), go straight through two lights. Brief Ride Description: This ride is an attempt to tackle the second half-century of Santa Rosa CCUs infamous "Terrible Two" course and is the second of a series of 3 rides which cover the hardest ascents of that course. Healdsburg is not actually on the "Terrible Two" route, but offers a convenient starting point. Owing to the necessity of carrying out a loop and in the philosophy of avoiding needless backtracking, the first and last sections of this ride do not form part of the RTerrible TwoS course, therefore. Notes: I drove the course, January 6th and March 3rd, 1996. It was cold in the early-mid morning but warm throughout the day. I rode the course, March 16th, 1996 when it was hot. It should be possible to complete the course comfortably in under 4 hours in most conditions. The major climb in this ride is over "The Geysers", a tough, exposed, double-summit ascent. Once you leave Healdsburg and until you reach Cloverdale, there are no sources of food or water, so be prepared. The second section of Geysers Road is very narrow and rough in places; it is also quite remote. There are some very steep descents on the Geysers. In particular, be very careful of numerous unsurfaced portions. Useful Maps: "Krebs Cycle" Bicycle Touring Map, North San Francisco Bay/Sacramento; CSAA: Sonoma and Napa Counties. Devised by: Richard Bone (rgab@crl.com), January 1996; minor amendments, July 1996. See Also: Parts I #0287) and III (#0289) of this "mini-series" of rides which take in the climbs over "Trinity Grade" and Skaggs Springs, respectively. Note that it would be possible to combine this ride with Part I of this series to make a long century ride, based out of Santa Rosa.
