Santa Rosa - Trinity/Oakville Grades (ride rating: X/3(4000')/76)
Testing the "Terrible Two" Part I Richard G. A. Bone 10/96 X/3(4000')/76 Starting Point: CalTrans Park and Ride (1-800 834 3032), Santa Rosa, CA; Or the adjacent County Fairgrounds, Santa Rosa, CA. Advisable to phone ahead for activities at Fairgrounds. Directions: Take Hwy-101 (N) and exit East on Route 12 in Santa Rosa (follow signs for Sonoma and County Fairgrounds). Take the first exit off Route 12 (Hendley Rd., Fairgrounds, Bennett Valley Rd.) and park in the Fairgrounds parking lot adjacent to the road (on the right) or the CalTrans “Park and Ride” opposite, under Highway-12 (turn sharp left to enter). Brief Ride Description: This ride is an attempt to tackle the first part of the infamous "Terrible Two" course and is one of a series of 3 rides which cover the hardest ascents of that course. Owing to the necessity of carrying out a loop and with the philosophy of avoiding needless backtracking, the last section of this ride does not form part of the “Terrible Two” course. The trip distance, according to the odometer of my car, is approximately 76 miles. Total climbing will exceed 4,000 ft. and includes the first of the major climbs of the “Terrible Two”, Trinity/Oakville Grade. Notes: I drove the course, January 6th, 1996. It was cold in the early-mid morning but warm throughout the day. I rode the course, January 20th, 1996 during which it was raining and quite cold. It should be possible to complete the course comfortably in under 6 hours in inclement conditions; under 5 hours in good weather. There are some narrow winding roads and some steep descents on the course. In particular, be very careful descending Trinity Grade, especially if there is dew or other moisture on the road. Useful Maps: "Krebs Cycle" Bicycle Touring Map, North San Francisco Bay/Sacramento; CSAA: Santa Rosa and Vicinity, Sonoma and Napa Counties, Napa Valley Communities (or Napa, Calistoga, St. Helena and Vicnity). Devised by: Richard Bone (rgab@crl.com), January 1996; minor amendments, July 1996. See Also: Parts II (#0288) and III (#289) of this "mini-series" of rides which take in the climb over "The Geysers" and Skaggs Springs, respectively. Note that it would be possible to combine this ride with Part II to make a long century ride. Directions: Turn At On to For Comment R 0.0 Bennett Valley Rd. 0.2 ! The Terrible Two cuts out "downtown" Calistoga; the most direct route is to follow Hwy-29 through Calistoga to Hwy-128. ** There are several roads which could be taken back to Santa Rosa. Chalk Hill, further up Hwy-128 is another possibility.
