SF SF to Redwood City (ride rating: X/?/28)
Bike Routes SF, SFO, & Southward (was Pedal Rev) Here are several route ideas that I like between the Peninsula and San Francisco: DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO / SFO / REDWOOD CITY (Bayfront route) Third Street (through Hunters Point and under 101) Old Bayshore (accessible via Geneva also) LEFT over 101 at Oyster Point (first opportunity to cross after you've descended past the stop sign at the east end of San Bruno Mtn) RIGHT at the light on the first large street through the office park east of 101, which "segues" into Airport Blvd at Grand CONTINUE down through SFO LEFT on Peninsula (Burlingame); pass through the entrance kiosk for Coyote Point (no fee for cyclists) and bear left slightly to avoid going into the golf course RIGHT on the bayfront bike path LEFT on Third Avenue (San Mateo)(this is one of the few places where it is usually safe to ride on the left shoulder for a few hundred feet until you reach a crossover point, but you may wish to walk across Third and its median to avoid this). RIGHT on Mariner's Island STRAIGHT ahead on Edgewater (Foster City) RIGHT on Boothbay; at the end of Boothbay look for a ped/bike passage through the houses to the bayfront bike path LEFT on bayfront bike path (actually mudflat or estuary-front, at this point) RIGHT at the first opportunity across into Redwood Shores office park; scan for a small recreation park with a baseball backstop screen and head for that; facilities include rest rooms CONTINUE out of the park to the stoplight at Marine/Ralston STRAIGHT across Marine/Ralston, kink to right onto 101 frontage road RIGHT at Holly/Redwood Shores LEFT at Old County (Belmont/San Carlos) >From this point you can continue south into Redwood City by following Old County and zigzagging a bit in downtown RC to find Middlefield. Distance from central SF to RC, about 28 - 30 miles. Riding time south, 2 hours; a bit more north and into the prevailing wind. A COUPLE OF ALTERNATIVES >From DC BART to SSF and the SFO/Airport Blvd route: (This has the advantage of starting off with a nice long descent, pretty much all the way into South San Francisco, at the "T") Top of the Hill (Daly City) RIGHT on Mission/El Camino PASS the first large cemeteries in Colma, then LEFT off of El Camino and on to Mission LEFT at the stoplight when you come to the "T" and have to turn one way or the other RIGHT on Grand or one of the parallel streets RIGHT on Old Bayshore, under the overpass LEFT under 101 RIGHT on North Airport Blvd (this point is about 3 miles north of SF)
